The Backus conference rooms were packed Thursday afternoon, Sept. 29, during the third annual Multicultural Health Fair . Among the 20 countries were represented at the health fair including Honduras, Cambodia, Puerto Rico, Poland, Cape Verde, Haiti and France. The fair offered visitors a chance to learn about health issues, birth customs and end-of-life issues of the various cultures represented.

NORWICH – The William W. Backus Hospital will host its third annual Multicultural Health Fair on Thursday, September 29, from 3 to 7 p.m. in the hospital’s main entrance conference rooms.
The eighth annual Backus Hospital Auxiliary Mini Golf Tournament took place Saturday, September 24 at Knolls and Holes Course at Odetah Camping Resort in Bozrah. There was plenty of good-natured competition on the course and plenty of good food before and after the event. Money raised from the event goes to the Auxiliary in support of Backus Hospital programs.
NORWICH – Tickets are available for the 2011 Survivors in Fashion show on Thursday, Oct. 20 from 7-9 p.m. at Foxwoods Resort Casino’s Fox Theatre.
Many cancer survivors will say that you can’t let your guard down. Fourteen years after her original diagnosis, Barbara had a re-occurrence of breast cancer – which she self-detected, and acted upon immediately. Six years later, she is now involved in many fund-raising and awareness raising projects with Backus Hospital and other community organizations.
Backus Hospital was proud to be one of the sponsors of Family Day in Mohegan Park Sunday, September 18. This was a very successful event that brought more than 1000 visitors to view the many exhibits set up by public and private agencies serving families in this region. Several junior nursing students from UCONN were on hand to help out with the Backus exhibit which offered advice on how to stop smoking, how to wash hands thoroughly and also the need to wear a bicycle helmet. One of the highlights of the event was a huge Cha-Cha-Slide dance routine with a hundred dancers including Backus' Traumaroo and the Crash Test Dummies.
Backus Hospital celebrated the one-year anniversary of its Backus Weight Loss Program with a special event at the Backus Outpatient Care Center Tuesday, Sept. 20. During the past year, participants in the program, which may include Lap_Band surgery, nutritional advice and lifestyle changes, have lost a combined total of one ton of weight.
NIANTIC – The William W. Backus Hospital is seeking walkers to join its team for the American Heart Association’s 2011 Heart Walk at Rocky Neck State Park in Niantic on Sunday, Oct, 2. Registration begins at 9 a.m. with official start at 10 a.m.
