The tastes of native dishes and sounds of ethnic music were evident Thursday as the Backus Hospital conference rooms were transformed into a meeting of countries at the fourth annual Multicultural Health Fair.

The ninth annual Backus Hospital Auxiliary Mini Golf Tournament took place Saturday, September 22 at the Odetah Camping Resort in Bozrah. This always-popular event is a major fund raiser for the Auxiliary. Thanks to the Adelman family for providing the use of their beautiful facility and challenging mini golf course, and for the great financial donation they made at the event to be used for the cancer programs at Backus. Les Morrell, a former camper and counselor at the campground, also made a donation on behalf of the Odetah Camping Resort Alumni. Also, thanks to Backus Food and Nutrition for the great food and service, and to everyone else who helped pull this event together.
Hundreds of people helped to join in the fight against diabetes during the American Diabetes Association's Step Out walk to stop diabetes Sunday, Sept. 23, at Ocean Beach Park in New London. Many local teams, including one from Backus, took part in the event which was blessed by beautiful weather and a brisk breeze coming in off the ocean. Thanks to all of those who participated and who volunteered their time to help raise money to help fight this disease that has touched 296,000 lives in Connecticut this year.

With cases of pertussis, also known as “whopping cough” rising at alarming rates, Backus Hospital is partnering with the Uncas Health District to protect infants by providing immunizations for parents, grandparents and caregivers.
