New and veteran nurses team up to help Haitians

Cassie Gryczewski is a first-year nurse who works on A-2. Beth Barnes has been a nurse for more than 30 years, the last eight in the Backus Emergency Department. Their lives intersected recently in Haiti, where they worked together on third shift in a cholera camp.

Backus Shovels Out After Major Winter Storm

Backus Hospital joined the rest of the community Wednesday, January 12, in clearing and shoveling more than a foot of snow that covered the region following a major storm. Thanks to everyone on the staff who helped to keep things running smoothly.

Backus offers safe snow removal tips

NORWICH – Take precautions when removing snow – snowblower and snow shoveling injuries are common this time of year. Dr. Tarik Kardestuncer, an orthopedic surgeon on the Backus Medical Staff, said every year he sees several snowblower injuries, usually occurring when someone sticks their hand in the machine.

Backus creates new support group

NORWICH – On Jan. 11 Backus Hospital will begin offering a new cancer support group that focuses on the psychological and social issues people diagnosed with cancer face. “Diagnosed with Cancer? What You Need to Know” will be held the second Tuesday of every month from 5-6 p.m. in Backus Hospital’s main lobby conference room #1.

Lose weight, enjoy life

PLAINFIELD – A new Enjoy LIFE (Lifelong Investment in Fitness & Exercise) Active Challenge program begins Thursday, Jan. 20, with an exercise variety show that includes a food demonstration by Backus Hospital dietitians, represtentatives from the Backus Weight Loss Center, Marie’s Fitness, Plainfield Curves and more.

CCU reaches 1000-day patient safety milestone

Backus Hospital’s Critical Care Unit has gone 1,000 straight days without a central line infection, an accomplishment that places it among the best CCU’s in the nation.
