Car wash to benefit Backus volunteer program

NORWICH – Backus Hospital Junior Volunteers are having a car wash open to the public on Saturday, August 13 from 9 a.m. to noon in the hospital’s Lafayette Street parking lot.

Backus offers tips to avoid heat-related illness

NORWICH – Although other kinds of weather might get more attention, heat is actually the most dangerous event of all, said Dr. Steven Powell, a pulmonologist on The William W. Backus Hospital Medical Staff. In fact, the National Weather Service reports that heat kills more people per year – approximately 162 -- than floods, lightning, tornadoes and hurricanes combined.

Baseballs signed by Yankees’ stars Jeter and Hughes highlight stroke center fundraiser

PRESTON – A July 30 fundraiser to benefit The William W. Backus Hospital Stroke Center will include an auction for baseballs signed by New York Yankees pitcher Phil Hughes and shortstop Derek Jeter, who recently became a member of the 3,000-hit club.
