Backus Hospital offers asthma education classes

NORWICH – Backus Hospital will host a series of four asthma education classes on Mondays Jan. 7, 14, 21 and 28, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Backus Outpatient Care Center, 111 Salem Turnpike in Norwich.

The Backus Birthing Center

There will be an open house for parents-to-be at the Backus Birthing Center October 29. In addition to presentations by an Obstetrician, Pediatrician, and other clinical staff, visitors will receive an overview of the classes offered at the hospital and can take a tour of the birthing center. More than two years into a three-year Community Health Improvement Plan, Backus is making strides to meet the healthcare needs of eastern Connecticut as identified by Holleran, a national healthcare research firm that conducted a needs survey of the community in 2010.

CDC and FDA perform multistate meningitis outbreak investigation

NORWICH – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in conjunction with the Food and Drug Administration, have recently announced a multistate investigation of fungal meningitis among patients who received an epidural steroid injection with a potentially contaminated product.

Cancer Survivors Day 2012

More than 600 cancer survivors, families and friends gathered Saturday at Backus Hospital to celebrate survivorship. As part of Cancer Survivors Day some speakers spoke about their own experiences with cancer and Bernie Siegel, MD, a nationally recognized inspirational speaker and author, spoke about the importance of surrounding yourself with love and support while going through treatments. Backus Joins In Heart Walk 2012 at Rocky Neck State Park

A team of hearty walkers from Backus joined groups from throughout the region for the annual Heart Walk at Rocky Neck State Park in Niantic Sunday morning. The event, which supports the American Heart Association, raises money to help in the fight against heart disease and stroke. Thanks to all of the Backus staff, Backus volunteers and their families and friends for taking part in this event.
