More than 600 cancer survivors, families and friends gathered Saturday at Backus Hospital to celebrate survivorship. As part of Cancer Survivors Day some speakers spoke about their own experiences with cancer and Bernie Siegel, MD, a nationally recognized inspirational speaker and author, spoke about the importance of surrounding yourself with love and support while going through treatments. A team of hearty walkers from Backus joined groups from throughout the region for the annual Heart Walk at Rocky Neck State Park in Niantic Sunday morning. The event, which supports the American Heart Association, raises money to help in the fight against heart disease and stroke. Thanks to all of the Backus staff, Backus volunteers and their families and friends for taking part in this event.
