Cancer survivorship to be celebrated

NORWICH – Backus
Hospital and the American Cancer Society have combined two major events for
local cancer survivors.
The Relay for Life and Cancer Survivors Day will be held together on June 26-27 at the Norwich Free Academy track.
The organizations decided to collaborate because both events celebrate survivorship and national Cancer Survivors Day is in June. Backus previously held Cancer Survivors Day in October.
“This is an exciting opportunity to combine two great events, celebrate survivorship and enhance fundraising for the cancer society,” said Backus Cancer Services Clinical Director Ginny Mabesoone. Mabesoone, a registered nurse and cancer survivors, is organizing Backus Hospital’s participation in event.
Backus is forming a team to fundraise and walk the track throughout the 2-day event at Norwich Free Academy June 26-27. The event begins at 11 a.m. on June 26 with a speaking program and then a survivors lap. The cancer survivors are then invited to enjoy refreshments as part of Backus Hospital’s survivors’ reception tent.
To join the Backus team call Brooke Crider at ext. 2398 or email at bcrider@wwbh.org if you are interested in participating. The cost is $10 and that includes a T-shirt that can be worn the day of the event. All proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society of Southeastern Connecticut. There is no cost for cancer survivors to register on the Backus team or to attend the event.
