Backus Hospital has provided quality health care to the residents of Eastern Connecticut since 1893.

The Backus Health System includes a not-for-profit, 213-bed hospital in Norwich and numerous off-site locations, including several health centers, Backus Home Health Care and the Backus Outpatient Care Center, also in Norwich.


Backus Health Centers are located in Montville, Ledyard, Colchester, Norwich, and North Stonington, and additional labs for blood draws are available throughout the region.

The Outpatient Care Center offers a wide range of services including a weight loss center, diabetes center, arthritis center, physical therapy, radiology, laboratory services, woundcare, a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, anti-coagulation clinic, and more.

The Backus Medical Staff includes approximately 300 expert physicians offering a wide range of healthcare services.

2Lifestar0108Backus offers the only trauma center in New London and Windham counties and is the only area hospital with LIFE STAR helicopter services, in partnership with Hartford Hospital.

A new Backus Emergency Care Center, offering emergency services 24 hours per day, seven days per week, as well as diagnostic imaging and laboratory services, opened in 2012.

The main hospital Emergency Department serves more than 60,000 people per year, and consistently receives some of the highest patient satisfaction scores in the nation.

Guide1217Backus is accredited as a comprehensive community hospital cancer program, one that offers the best in cancer care, close to home for patients.

The Backus Cancer Center offers the latest technology, coupled with expert physicians, due in part to its partnership with Eastern Connecticut Hematology and Oncology (ECHO).

By partnering with ECHO oncologists, The Dr. Sultan Ahamed Radiation Therapy Center patients are offered a wide range of clinical trials not typically found in a community hospital setting. In addition, the Backus Diagnostic Imaging Department has been accredited as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology.


The health system includes a strong minimally-invasive surgery program, offering services from interventional radiology to the da Vinci surgical robot.

The daVinci allows physicians to perform surgeries less invasively with more precision,. The robot is used to perform prostate surgeries, hysterectomies, bladder and kidney procedures, to name a few.


Backus employs more than 1,800 people.

Surgeons affiliated with Backus Physician Services offer general surgery, bariatric surgery, breast reconstruction, colo-rectal surgery, aesthetic surgery, hand surgery and thoracic surgery. Its Surgical Services Department includes a high-definition operating room, with the latest technology for precision purposes.

The hospital also partners with the Women & Infants Hospital of Providence, RI, and Hartford Hospital, for patients with specialized needs.
