Backus stroke program receives state designation
June 30, 2011
NORWICH – The state Department of Public Health has re-designated Backus as a Primary Stroke Center, meaning the hospital provides the best evidence-based care for stroke patients.
“I would like to thank everyone associated with our stroke program for all they’ve done to help us achieve re-designation, and their life-saving efforts throughout the year,” said Anthony Alessi, MD, Medical Director of the Stroke Program.
State designation is for a two-year period. Backus is part of a statewide initiative to offer consistent, quality care to stroke patients.
Backus recently participated in an application process that included submitting data on stroke admissions, treatment plans, outcomes as well as stroke specific staff education.
The goal of the program is to decrease premature deaths and disabilities associated with stroke. The protocol-driven response to stroke care provides a well-orchestrated effort on behalf of each patient, said Cindy Arpin, RN, Coordinator of the Program.
