Panera Waterford and Foxwoods to offer Pink Ribbon Bagels to Benefit Backus Hospital During Breast Cancer Awareness Month
September 27, 2012
Panera Breads in Waterford and Mashantucket (Foxwoods), CT are once again inviting their customers to join the fight against breast cancer by enjoying a signature Pink Ribbon Bagel for breakfast, lunch or dinner during national Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. In celebration of the 11th Annual Pink Ribbon Bagel Campaign, twenty-five cents from each Pink Ribbon Bagel sold at the Waterford and Foxwoods bakery-cafes will be donated to Backus Hospital in Norwich, CT for its breast health programs and initiatives. The Panera Breads in Waterford and Foxwoods are two of twenty-four bakery-cafes owned and operated by leading franchisee, Howley Bread Group, LTD based in Cumberland, RI. Panera Gift Cards will also be donated to the hospital so they can, in turn, be given to breast cancer survivors.
“We were thrilled when Panera Bread and Howley Bread Group shared the good news that we were going to be the beneficiary of the Pink Ribbon Bagel Campaign once again,” said Genevieve Schies, Development Director, Office of Philanthropy and Development, at Backus Hospital. “This Campaign has certainly helped us raise funds for our specific programs in the past and this year’s support will further assist our efforts to promote the importance of early detection and breast cancer education and awareness.”
The Panera Pink Ribbon Bagel is baked fresh daily in each of Panera Bread’s bakery-cafes and features cherry chips, dried cherries, cranberries, vanilla, honey and brown sugar. The project follows the tradition of “thinking pink” during the month of October in the quest to eradicate breast cancer disease. Sue Stees, one of Panera Bread’s first franchisees and a breast cancer survivor, developed the idea for the bagel in 2001 as a way to help support the cause. Today, the program is employed in most of Panera Bread’s more than 1,500 bakery-cafes.
“We’re honored to support Backus Hospital again in their continuing efforts to increase the awareness of breast cancer and the importance of early detection,” said Bill Shea, District Manager for Panera Bread/HBG. ”I appeal to all our customers who have had their lives touched by breast cancer to head on down to your local Panera and enjoy a Pink Ribbon Bagel to further the cause.”
