Backus patient portal engages patients, involves providers

With Backus Hospital’s new patient portal, patients now have instant access to their health information 24 hours a day. (Visit the Backus Patient Portal).

By completing a simple, safe and secure registration process, patients can access their health information at their own convenience, when their schedules permit. Gone are the days of being locked into a nine-to-five schedule. Other hospitals across the nation and the region, including Windham Hospital, will be adopting this technology in the future.

The Backus portal gives patients access to test results online, versus over the phone or in-person. It provides a channel for patients to see upcoming scheduled appointments and request prescription refills from their providers. The portal also allows patients to exchange messages with their providers between visits. In addition to providing an online tool to help patients better manage their health, the Backus portal also meets “meaningful use” guidelines set forth by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

CMS guidelines call upon physicians and hospitals to demonstrate that they are “meaningfully using” their certified electronic health record technology by meeting certain standards. These standards mandate that physicians and hospitals provide patients with timely electronic access to their health information and electronic copies of their health record to clinical summaries of each office visit and patient-specific education resources.
