Cut-a-thon benefits Backus Breast Cancer Survivor Fund

It started at noon, and by 12:30 the line was out the door at the Antenna Salon in Norwichtown Sunday, April 10. Congratulations to salon artistic director JD and his entire staff for their great success with the hair cut-a-thon that took place Sunday afternoon to benefit the Backus Hospital Breast Cancer Survivor Fund and The Patient Navigator Program. Backus donors are the region’s real safety net

Backus Hospital’s first Philanthropy Day had a distinctive family flair. There was the Martinelli family, whose donation helped Backus purchase a device that helps stroke victims and others learn to swallow again. There was the Lord family, who provided funding for MyHealthDirect, a computerized way to connect people without medical homes to primary care providers, thus decreasing costly and ineffective emergency room visits.

Donation links patients to community doctors

The Edward and Mary Lord Foundation has pledged $100,000 toward MyHealthDirect, an innovative tool at Backus Hospital that links patients who lack a primary care physician with appropriate healthcare providers. This provides more timely and ongoing care for patients, and reduces visits to the emergency room.

First Friday at Backus

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and to raise money for the Backus Breast Health Initiative, employees at Backus Hospital and other local businesses took part in a series of First Friday activities on Oct. 1 that included a bake sale, pink decorations, pink sticker sales and dress pink fund-raisers. Thanks to all who took part and donated to this cause.

"For seven years now, the Backus Auxiliary has staged a most unusual — and suceessful — fundraiser. This year the event took place Saturday, September 25, 2010. The annual mini-golf tournament has become an early-Autumn event in a terrific New England setting (thanks to the generosity of the Adelman family, owners of the Odetah Camping Resort), and — most of all — great spirit (thanks to the hard work of the Backus Auxiliary staff).
