Backus Hospital Reflection Garden

Update as of July, 2025

What is happening?

  • Backus Hospital’s outdoor courtyard rejuvenation is currently underway!
  • These improvements are part of our ongoing efforts to enhance this unique space for both patients and colleagues and create an environment that promotes well-being, personal connections and relaxation.
  • Among the exciting additions will be a new Reflection Garden, designed to be a peaceful retreat for quiet reflection, moments of respite and a space to memorialize and honor those we have lost. The garden will feature new landscaping, enhanced seating areas, and soothing elements that will contribute to a serene atmosphere for everyone to enjoy.

How will the work get done?

  • We anticipate the work to get done in 3 phases over the next year.
  • Phase 1 (happening now this summer), involves our teams working on cleaning up overgrown greenery, pulling up pavers, and expanding our patio to create a larger future seating area.
  • Phase 2 is anticipated to continue this fall with some new seasonal plantings outside along the MOB/main hospital corridor.  This will be considered our pollinator garden, and yes, we will be keeping the beautiful maple and gingko trees in the courtyard.
  • Phase 3 we expect to continue next year in the Spring of 2026.  This is the phase that will include our reflection garden, a place of tranquility to sit and remember colleagues, patients, providers, and others.  We’d like to thank the medical staff for their kind donation towards this meaningful space.  There will be more to come as this space is still developing.

We will continue to keep updates here on this webpage.
