Joint Replacement Pre-Op Class

Patients who plan to undergo Joint Replacement Surgery are expected by their orthopaedic surgeons to attend the Joint Replacement Pre-Op Class.

This newly designed interactive educational program is coordinated and taught by Backus Hospital Nursing Navigators. These classes are available multiple times per month.

Please contact Backus Hospital at 860.425.5332 or 860.460.8619 to schedule a class no less than two weeks prior to your surgery. This program will help you to better understand what to expect with your joint replacement.

Representatives from the following areas will be available to offer information and answer questions specific to your individual needs:

  • Nursing Navigators
  • Physical Therapy
  • Discharge Planning

The discharge planning process helps patients to determine the optimal course of rehabilitation post operatively. Ideally the plan should be to return home after your joint replacement. A pre op assessment will be done to help us prepare you for discharge. In the occasional event that a short term rehab necessary, the case manager on the unit will set you up with a rehab facility in close proximity to your home and family. Joint replacement patients who participate in pre-operative education classes will become better prepared for their upcoming surgery.

The nurse navigators provide specific instructions on how to prepare for surgery, equipment requirements, insurance restriction and post-operative care. We have classes scheduled for multiple days, times and locations. Class is designated for patients having a Total Knee, Hip or Shoulder replacement.
